Bohemia

Continuo classics, 2010

Album cover

For their first recording together, Dana Ciocarlie and Marianne Piketty chose to travel to Bohemia, the heart of folk inspiration, through three masterpieces from the Czech repertoire and a contemporary transcription. Inspired by folklore and traditional songs, Suk's Pieces and Janáček's Dumka are a perfect introduction to the colors of the Slavic soul. Martinu's Third Sonata is one of the composer's major works. It is his radiant joie de vivre that wins us over, his enthusiasm, his irresistible force. The sonata is characterized by its irregular, swaying rhythm, sometimes even inspired by jazz, a rhythm that so aptly conveys song and the uncontrolled movements of the soul. Janácek's sonata is the work of an isolated and wild genius, defying classification. A poet speaks in an unforgettable way: he tells his story, and suddenly we recognize our own pain.
